I have been lied to on several occasions. Wanting to resolve a paycheck or reimbursement issues. I make appointments and always on the last day they cancel it and say they will not be there. Issues like: I was told that my travel expenses would be paid on top of my salary and never received them. I have never been allowed to see my contract since I signed it. Never saw a pay stub since I worked for them. Rarely receive a full paycheck despite working a full month never being sick or missing work. Never receiving my paycheck on the same day. So anyway….I show up and they are there and refuse to see me regarding my issues or questions. Watch out! the cops know this place cause they always get called there to throw out an angry employee.. just check the local police records! This office is about 2 hours plus away from anywhere. This is why they make you go there to resolve problems. Its an expensive trip for an ALT salary and about 4 hours round trip for most. What a dirty little trick to keep you away from the office. This is where they also have students and you will go there for your application and bogus interview. By bogus interview I mean yea, they do their little check list for the psychological profile and they do their little check list for training but its basically a fraud to keep the auditors away so they can say: “Oh! he or she was screened and trained!” The training and profile was a complete joke! Anyone can lie and schlep through the training. Also none of my educational documentation was checked or verified only my I.D and Passport, VISA application etc………. Actually this is good if you want to slip by without the proper educational requirements. During the interviews I got a different story about pay and working conditions from each staff member. We started at a number as posted on the Jobs in Japan site and it got lower and lower until I signed a contract with the final number. Lets just say I work full time but get part time pay. No one ever gets paid the amount shown in the ad and that’s a fact. Here is yet another thing that I just cannot believe: Like many ALT dispatch companies, they tell ignorant applicants that they must arrive on a holiday visa or working holiday and then they fuck around last minute and change it to a working visa later… mean wile you bite your nails off. Hey whatever it takes right? Well this is visa fraud and it’s illegal. It also means they have you by the balls for three months and can fire you or whatever they want and say you lied about your visa! Ha ha ha brilliant plan Dr. Evil! Brilliant!!!. The Japanese government seems to turn a blind eye to this behavior as well. If you really want a job would you complain? I think not, but its wrong and many people come here with dreams only to suffer their first year with companies like this. What a terrible way to start your new life or stay in Japan.
Also…….. There is no paper trail! No documents or textbooks or training sheets ever leave any office. These people want no trace of any training, documents or anything leaving any official meeting or application signing. Makes you wonder huh? You have to take notes! Absolutely nothing is written down and that’s half the reason for so much confusion and anger from employees. I think the shadows that run the company want it this way. Zero liability? Keep the employee in the dark!
I almost forgot! In addition to that, the company has ordered me to commit tax fraud against the Japanese government which I have been doing for years. I remain anonymous due to this and in fact I fear physical or political harm from the company or the government. The fraud and blackmail is this: We were told at our meetings and interviews many times that in order to avoid a 40000 yen deduction from our salary we must provide the company with receipts. These receipts are to be taken out of the trash or the recycle bins at stores. These are not our receipts and have nothing to do with company expenses and therefore they are fraudulent deductions. This is a true statement and any ALT that is not scared can testify accordingly. This is easy to verify. Simple: audit the company and find all the bogus receipts that are not for the employees. There will be no way to connect the receipts with actual expenses. The reason we must do this, as told by the staff at JALSS, is that this helps the company lower its taxes.
Look I work for this company because I need the check every month. In this economy I need something stable for now. I am not happy but am fortunate to have a job. This does not justify the way that JALSS treats their employees and breaks the law and I fear they will not last the year. If they do I will be quite amazed at the survival of a company who acts the way they do. After being sued by employees and found guilty in the Japanese high court of several labor law violations and ordered to pay damages to employees, they just go right back to business as usual and ignore the judgement. Does the Japanese government really care about ALTs and how they are now exploited buy these companies? I wonder who did all the lobbying to change the laws in favor of all the Maxs out there? Does the BOE care about how unscreened and completely untrained SOME of the ALTs are that they supply. Why are there few employees that stay and a huge monthly turn around of new recruits? They all loose their paycheck for quitting so who keeps the money! Is it in the safe at Asaka? Well after getting what I need from them I will look elsewhere for work and I hope buy then things are better. I actually give a shit about how I do my job and enjoy teaching in Japanese schools. For now I am stuck with JALSS and as long as the check arrives every month I will tough it out.
